Chiang Mai is the principal metropolis in the upper North of Thailand and second only to the national capital of Bangkok in terms of development. On the whole, Chiang Mai has achieved physical and economic progress that is not very different from what can be found in Bangkok.

On the other hand, there are still some localities, particularly those nestled in the valleys, where people still carry on the traditional lifestyle dating back generations.
